You are entitled to diminished value if your car was repaired after being in an accident. Diminished value is the amount of money your car decreases in value because it has been in a wreck. When you go to sell your car, the car dealer or buyer can pull a report out of a national database using your car’s VIN number. When they see your car was in an accident, it makes your car worth less. In most States, you have a legal right for the insurance company to compensate you for this lost value.

The amount of diminished value you may be entitled to varies wildly based on a lot of factors. To get started you should first make sure you “qualify” for a claim. You should have a claim if:

Your car’s fair market value prior to the accident was at least $5,000.

Repairs exceeded $1,500.

Your car is no less than eight years old.

Your car doesn’t have a salvage title.

Once you tell the insurance company that you want diminished value, they will get back to you with an offer. As with all offers in life, their first number is usually not the highest they are willing to go. It is a starting point to see if you will jump at it and to see if you are up to a negotiation.

If you decide to counter the insurance company’s offer, you are going to need to present a dollar amount that you think your car lost in value. You just can’t pull a number out of thin air. You need to find a diminished value appraiser who will run your car’s numbers and give you an official report on how much value your car lost. You then send your adjuster this report and demand the diminished value amount the adjuster came up with.

With the cost of goods and fuel skyrocketing, drivers are looking for all available alternatives to cut down fuel consumption and therefore cut down monthly fuel expenses. That is why hybrid fuel-efficient vehicles that offer great gas mileage are the top choice for these drivers. Three hybrids that offer just this are the 2011 Toyota Prius, 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid and the 2012 Toyota Prius V.

The 2011 edition of Toyota Prius has been voted by auto reviewers to be the most fuel-efficient hybrid available in the current auto market. The Prius sells at a starting price of an affordable $23,520, although with the installation of additional features and options, the starting price can go up well over the mark of thirty thousand. This Toyota hybrid is critically applauded for its exceptional fuel saving capability. For a highway drive, the vehicle effortlessly covers 48 miles for a gallon, and 51 miles per gallon for a drive on the city. Other features that the Prius offers are ABS brakes, rearview camera and airbags.

Japanese automobile companies have proven to their American and European competitors that their stronghold on the hybrid vehicle market will remain strong for the foreseeable future. The 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid is another testament to this. For a starting price of $24 050, the Civic Hybrid is deemed to be Honda that offers the best gas mileage. Its economical fuel consumption allows the vehicle to cover 43 miles per gallon of fuel for highway driving, and 40 miles per gallon for city driving.

The love of motorcycle riding does not die with the change of seasons. You can still enjoy riding even when the winter weather hits. It just takes the right know-how on protecting your body and motorcycle to do so safely.

Preparing Your Motorcycle

Let’s talk about your motorcycle first, it needs to be equipped with the correct tires for one thing. You need tires that will grip the road even when the temperature dips down. Your summer tires will not work for winter roads. As you probably already know, there are many styles of motorcycle tires and the ones you need for winter are the ones like knobblies or other well-treaded tires. Check out your tires before the weather turns cold to make sure they will handle winter conditions.

The type of oil you use in your motorcycle might need to be switched out to a thinner one for the colder months. However, see what the manufacturer of your bike recommends. It could only say that one type of oil can be used in the motorcycle year round.

Protecting Yourself

It is extremely important that you keep yourself warm enough while riding your motorcycle in the winter. The best way to do this is wearing layers of clothing. You need one layer to hold in heat for your body this layer should also absorb any sweat a wick it away. Your top layer should be windproof and waterproof. Good materials for this are ones like nylon and leather. Still make sure you have freedom of movement.

Make sure to have a couple pairs of socks under your sturdy leather boots. It is important that your feet stay warm. The same with your hands, you can wear an extra layer under the gloves made of microfiber to hold the heat in more effectively. You should have a quality pair of leather gloves on the outside.

In case you haven’t noticed, the trend toward downsizing isn’t limited to passenger cars. A lot of buyers choose to buy a compact SUV nowadays. Light, compact pickups have of course been marketed in all corners of the globe, and they are an ever-popular alternative to cars. Most car brands are increasingly producing smaller, more city-friendly versions of these traditionally resource-hungry vehicles, and it is not only the Asian brands producing these vehicles for budget-conscious buyers but also premium European manufacturers. Often, buyers who buy a compact SUV will see or hear the word crossover. What this means is that compact SUVs are often based on a passenger car platform rather than a truck platform, which traditional, full-sized SUVs are based on. When making a choice of the type of SUV you want, consider your actual needs. Those based on car platforms are well, more car-like, meaning better handling, higher fuel efficiency and better ride quality. With truck-based SUVs, you get a heavier platform which affects fuel economy but at the same time gives you good towing capacity, more room and a tougher vehicle.

Concurrent with this downsizing trend is the decision of some manufacturers to reduce the level of features and equipment for people looking to buy a compact SUV. Small SUVs like the Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4 are prime examples, where rarely-used features like all-wheel drive and their related hardware have been deleted. Engines are also smaller, and 2-liter gasoline engines are the norm. From the European side of the globe, such offerings include the BMW X1, the Audi Q3 and the just-released Mini Countryman.

Most of us don’t think twice about stepping behind the wheel once it’s dark. However, we definitely should. Experts state that accidents are more likely to occur at night. In addition, it’s a lot harder to see clearly at night which may make it difficult to spot pedestrians. Here are a few simple ways to stay safe.

Make sure that you get your eyes checked out frequently. It’s dangerous enough to operate a car with less than perfect vision during the day time. However, it’s much more dangerous at night due to reduced visibility. If you suffer from astigmatism, make sure you wear glasses or contacts designed specifically for your condition in order to reduce blurred vision. The problem with astigmatism is that it happens so gradually the sufferers may not even be aware of the fact that they have a problem.

Don’t use your high beams unless it’s an emergency since this can blind other drivers. Turn off the interior lights as well. Keep a safe distance between the car ahead.

Don’t forget to turn on your lights as soon as it gets dark. I see so many drivers on the road at night with theirs turned off. It could be simple forgetfulness, however it’s very unsafe. The worst is when they are speeding or driving on the freeway. They are endangering everyone on the road because we can’t see them coming. All it takes is for someone to make a sudden lane change for an accident to occur.

As stated earlier, visibility is greatly reduced at night. This means that it will be more difficult for you to spot a pedestrian or view the road ahead at night. You should be extra careful when maneuvering curves, especially if you aren’t familiar with the road. Also be on the lookout for pedestrians. Some will jay walk and cross the street at places they aren’t supposed to and it can be hard to spot them. Driving slower will allow you for more time to hit the brakes in case of an emergency.
